Mumbai:

Police arrested a 47-year-old man for allegedly stealing valuables from weddings and other events in Mumbai, an official said.

The defendant, identified as Shafique Abdul Kudus Sheikh alias Munna, a resident of Shivaji Nagar village, was arrested on Monday, the official said.

“He used to target weddings and condolences by going there in nice clothes so that no one would be suspicious of him. He collected information about the venues in newspapers,” said chief inspector of the Chembur Police Station, Shalini Sharma, on Monday.

Police had been looking for him for a while, but he disappeared during the COVID-19 lockdown, she said.

“He was caught by Shivaji Nagar on Monday. We are conducting a further investigation into the case,” she said.

During questioning, the defendant admitted to having committed five such crimes in Chembur and also in Juhu and other areas, the official said.
