Netflix fans, of course Halstonwho learns everything about the late American designer and his friendship with Liza Minnelli, will look for Liza’s wedding look IRL. The third episode of the miniseries reinterprets Liza’s little wedding in 1974 with Jack Haley Jr., for which Halston tailored a buttercup yellow pantsuit for his best friend, Judy Garland’s daughter. Some have said that the shadow was chosen as a tribute to the yellow brick street from Judy’s famous film The Wizard of Oz.
According to columnist Marilyn Beck, much of the wedding, which took place in a church in Montecito, California, was a tribute to Judy, as she had died five years ago and Jack’s father appeared as Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz. (Imagine that connection!) “For the lavish after-night party, Liza will wear a black velvet dress and replicas of the red jeweled slippers that Judy Garland wore The Wizard of Oz“Wrote Marilyn.
On the Netflix show, we see Halston Liza, played by Krysta Rodriguez, train outside the church and fix the details on her pants suit. “Repeat after me: I will marry the man of my year,” he says. This was Liza’s second wedding of four. She had previously married Australian artist Peter Allen in 1967 and married sculptor Mark Gero in 1979 after divorcing Haley. (Halston was also invited to that wedding.) Liza wore white gowns to marry Peter and Mark, which can be seen in front of you, and eventually married producer David Gest in 2002 in a silk dress by Bob Mackie, although they separated in 2007.
